Have you fallen victim to an expensive auto insurance policy? Don’t feel bad because there are a lot of people just like you who feel imprisoned by their auto insurance policy.

Many insurers compete to insure your vehicles, so it can be very hard to choose a insurance company and get the definite lowest price

You should make it a habit to compare prices once or twice a year since rates go up and down regularly. Just because you had the lowest rate on RL insurance a year ago you will most likely find a better price today. Don’t believe everything you read about auto insurance out there, but by reading this article, you’re going to learn a bunch of ideas how to put money back in your pocket.

Get lower-cost rates by taking advantage of discounts

Insurance is not inexpensive, but you might find some hidden discounts that you may not even know about. Certain credits will be shown when you get a quote, but some must be asked about before they will apply.

  • Drive Safe and Save – Drivers without accidents can get discounts for up to 45% lower rates on RL insurance than drivers with accident claims.
  • Accident Free – Drivers who stay claim-free can earn big discounts when compared to accident-prone drivers.
  • Discounts for Federal Employees – Federal government employees can save as much as 8% on RL insurance depending on your insurance provider.
  • First Accident Forgiveness – but companies like GEICO, State Farm, and Progressive will turn a blind eye to one accident before raising your premiums if you are claim-free prior to being involved in the accident.
  • Military Deployment Discount – Being deployed with a military unit could be rewarded with lower prices.
  • Sign Online – A few larger online companies provide a small discount get auto insurance digitally online.
  • Homeowners Savings – Owning a home may trigger a policy discount on insurance since owning and maintaining a home is proof that your finances are in order.
  • Pay Early and Save – If you can afford to pay the entire bill instead of making monthly payments you could save 5% or more.
  • Discount for Life Insurance – Select companies reward you with lower rates if you buy auto and life insurance together.
  • Multi-car Discount – Drivers who insure multiple cars or trucks on the same insurance policy can get a discount for every vehicle.

It’s important to note that some credits don’t apply to the entire policy premium. Some only apply to individual premiums such as comprehensive or collision. So when the math indicates you would end up receiving a 100% discount, you aren’t that lucky. Any amount of discount should help lower your overall premium however.

How your RL insurance costs are determined

Consumers need to have an understanding of the different types of things that come into play when calculating your insurance rates. If you know what controls the rates you pay, this helps enable you to make changes that can earn you much lower annual insurance costs.

  • High physical damage deductibles reduce rates – Physical damage insurance, aka comp and collision, covers damage that occurs to your Acura. Examples of covered claims could be collision with another vehicle, vandalism, and windstorm damage. Comprehensive and collision coverage deductibles tell how much you are required to spend before your insurance pays a claim. The more expense you have to pay, the better rate you will receive on RL insurance.
  • Liability coverage – Liability insurance is the coverage that protects you if ever a court rules you are at fault for damages caused by your negligence. This coverage provides legal defense coverage which can cost a lot. This coverage is relatively inexpensive compared to physical damage coverage, so do not skimp.
  • Guys pay more for auto insurance – Statistics have proven that men are more aggressive behind the wheel. It does not mean women are BETTER drivers than men. They both tend to get into auto accidents in similar percentages, but the male of the species tend to have more serious accidents. In addition to higher claims, males also get cited for more serious violations like DWI (DUI) or reckless driving.
  • Multiple policies with one company – Lots of companies will give a discount to clients who consolidate policies with them. It’s known as a multi-policy discount. Discounts can amount to as much as ten percent or more Even if you already get this discount, it’s always a smart idea to compare other insurance prices to guarantee you are still saving the most. You may still be able to find lower rates even if you insure with multiple companies
  • Better premiums on safer vehicles – Cars with five star safety ratings are cheaper to insure. Highly rated vehicles reduce the chance of injuries and better occupant protection translates into fewer and smaller insurance claims which can result in lower premiums. If your Acura has ratings of a minimum four stars on or an “acceptable” rating on you may pay a lower rate.

How much insurance coverage do I need?

When it comes to choosing the best insurance coverage coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no perfect coverage plan. Each situation is unique so this has to be addressed. For example, these questions might help in determining if you might need an agent’s assistance.

  • Do I need added coverage for expensive stereo equipment?
  • Should I have a commercial auto policy?
  • I don’t drive much so do I pay less?
  • Is my teen driver covered when they drive my company car?
  • How can I find cheaper teen driver insurance?
  • How do I insure my teen driver?
  • Do all my vehicles need collision coverage?
  • Am I covered by my employer’s commercial auto policy when driving my personal car for business?
  • What should my uninsured motorist coverage limits be in my state?
  • When does my teenage driver need to be added to my policy?

If you can’t answer these questions but you think they might apply to your situation, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, fill out this quick form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.

Specifics of your car insurance policy

Having a good grasp of a car insurance policy helps when choosing which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Shown next are typical coverage types found on the average car insurance policy.

Comprehensive car insurance

This coverage pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive insurance covers things such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, rock chips in glass, fire damage, vandalism and damage from flooding. The maximum payout you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

Coverage for medical expenses

Med pay and PIP coverage reimburse you for bills for things like EMT expenses, prosthetic devices, chiropractic care and dental work. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. Coverage applies to both the driver and occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage

Collision insurance

Collision coverage covers damage to your RL resulting from a collision with an object or car. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.

Collision can pay for claims such as colliding with another moving vehicle, backing into a parked car and crashing into a ditch. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. You can also choose a higher deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

Auto liability insurance

This can cover injuries or damage you cause to people or other property. It protects you from legal claims by others. It does not cover your injuries or vehicle damage.

Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see values of 50/100/50 which means a $50,000 limit per person for injuries, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property.

Liability insurance covers claims such as bail bonds, legal defense fees and emergency aid. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a decision to put some thought into, but buy as large an amount as possible.

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers

This coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your Acura RL.

Since a lot of drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage should not be overlooked.

Save for a rainy day

When getting auto insurance quotes online, it’s not a good idea to reduce coverage to reduce premium. There have been many situations where someone sacrificed liability coverage limits and discovered at claim time they didn’t purchase enough coverage. Your goal should be to purchase plenty of coverage at the lowest possible cost, but do not skimp to save money.

Some companies don’t offer the ability to get a quote online and usually these regional carriers sell through independent insurance agencies. Cheaper insurance can be purchased on the web and with local insurance agents, so you need to compare both to have the best rate selection.
